Last night we went over to my work to get all our veggie plants in the ground. I had totally scored the day before on Craigs List. Some guy was giving away free plants, and I got 14 tomato, 3 tomatillos, 8 cantelope, 4 picking cucumbers (with baby cuc's already growing!) and 6 cabbage. Some of the starts were pretty root bound, so I hope they perk up and dont die, but at least we didnt spend any money on them. We did go to the nursery for 2 more tomatillos, 6 broccoli, 6 brussel spouts, bunches of walla walla onions, a zuccini squash, and 2 pumpkin plants. We are ready to garden!! When we got there though, we were really really disapointed in the soil quality. She had said she would till it, and she did...but only about 5 inches and not very thoroughly at all. I felt like we were planting in a bed of rocks...you will see what I mean in a later picture.
Here is the garden before planting:

And here it is about halfway through planting (we have to get the tomatoes, tomatillos and onions in the ground tonight):

It seems like we left a lot of room between everything, but I think we stayed pretty close to the recommended distance, although we did use matthews foot as a guide so who knows how accurate it really is. LOL. Those two at the bottom are pumpkins, thats why they have so much space.
Here is a close up of the rocky soil...click on it to see what I mean:

We dug down a foot for each plant, then chopped the soil loosely and filled it back in, along with lime and fertilizer. Hopefully the plants will thrive even thought its not ideal conditions!
The kids had a BLAST! We were there about 2 hours, and they played happily together for most of it. They were so filthy when we got home, it was straight to the shower for them once we got home! But really, dirt and being outside on a great summer evening....now thats what life is all about when you are a kid (and a grownup too)!! They built a fort with all the dirt clods:

And had a great time with the hose:

All in all, it was a really fun time, but it made me yearn for land of our own, and a garden of our own so bad. Someday....someday. Hopefully we will get to share the fruits of our labors with all of you!
