Matthew had today off (usually he works Saturdays) so we decided to do something fun. But, we couldn't figure out what that fun thing should be. We had planned on strawberry picking, but found out that the place closest to us wouldn't be open for picking until Monday. We had a really late frost, and crummy cold weather this spring, which has really affected a lot of local crops. We decided to hit the zoo instead, but found when we got there that it was so busy, they were directing traffic away from the zoo to some far off shuttle. We aren't big on crowds ;) so we decided to go to the Washington Park playground instead. We were met with no parking and more huge crowds. DRAT! So, as we drove back towards the Zoo, we decided to go to Krugers Farm on Sauvies Island instead, since we were halfway there anyways. The farm was crowded too, but somehow it seems different when you are out in the fresh country air. We checked out the front strawberry patch, but got only a handful of berries. So we boarded the hay ride, and went to the far out patches....only to find about another handful or so. It was very slim pickins! Tons of greenies, hardly any red ones. I think this is going to be a very short berry season this year, meaning we have to get it together soon if we want to get enough to freeze and make jam with. We have plans to do both in the next two weeks....these Oregon strawberries are just too good to miss out on!
Here are some pictures from our day. Heading out to the fields:

Searching, searching, searching:

I had no idea artichokes grew like this!!

While we were waiting for the hayride, we watched these three hawks/eagles (not sure which) circling around the fields. They are so graceful, and beautiful to watch:

Killian found that half green berries were good enough for him (yuck!) and went around picking and sharing with Rowan:

Yahoo for berries!

Me and the kiddos:

We are going to be the first in line Monday morning when the fields near our house open up for picking, hopefully we will come home with pounds and pounds of these yummy berries :)
