I bought our turkey today! All 24.5 pounds of the big guy are chillin in the freezer while I look up thawing times and brining. I wanted to try brining the turkey last year, but chickened (haha) out at the last minute. I think I am going to give it a go this year, and if it fails....well, there are always mashed potatoes to pig out on ;) I am also going to give aromatics a try....I bet this is going to be one yummy turkey. I am really excited for Thanksgiving this year, we sat down with the family the other night and planned out what everyone is going to bring. They are all going to come over early in the day and help cook, which I think is going to be a lot of fun. Finally I have a kitchen big enough to accommodate all that goes into preparing a turkey dinner. Yay! And, my kitchen is going to smell really yummy, thanks to this great idea found in one of my many monthly food magazines.
Simmering Scents:
Toss citrus zest (Lemon, Orange or Grapefruit) and some whole spices (like cinnamon sticks, cloves, or allspice berries) into a pan of simmering water, and breath in the aroma of Christmas (Thanksgiving too!). Turn off the heat after 30 minutes. You will never need to buy a scented candle again!
I picked up some of each spice today in the bulk bins at Winco and an orange to go with it, and I cant wait to give it a try.
