Portlands living room

Tonight we took the kids downtown to see the Christmas tree lit up in Pioneer Square. Its the second year we have gone, but the first one that Rowan remembers what its like to stand under a tree that big! She was SO excited:

I couldn't get a great picture of them under the tree, to many lights, camera to crappy to get it right. Here is my best shot:

They ran around around the square for a while, and then we headed over to see Santa at the new Macy's. It replaced the old Meier and Frank store downtown, and I cant say that I am impressed. M&F used to do really neat window displays around the holidays, I remember going to see them when I was a kid (and we all know just how long ago that was)! It was always the 12 days of Christmas, and it was so fun to go from window to window watching the animated displays. This year, Macy's had some fake fluffy snow, and a couple ornaments in the windows. LAME. It didn't get much better inside...they took down the beloved monorail in 2005 and it hasn't been the same since. I think that was actually the last time we went, I remember I was huge and pregnant with Rowan, and Killian rode the monorail around for its last hurrah. Whoa, I found pictures from our last visit!
Killian and his cousin Sophia:

And Killian in the monorail!

I had forgotten all about these pictures! Anyways, the kids used to be able to ride the train all around the ceiling, as many times as they wanted, for free. This is how the monorail looks today:

So, while the kids had a great time seeing Santa, and sitting in the monorail car, and watching the electric train loop around the little village, it made me a little sad that they had lost so much of the old history and charm of the building.

After Santa, we headed back to the Square for some hot chocolate and people watching.

Both the kids really loved watching Max go by, its funny the things that grown ups think of as commonplace that kids see so much wonder and joy in. It was fun watching them, and Rowan totally got a sugar high from her hot chocolate, and Killian was just full of energy as usual. It was a fun night, and our first Christmas time activity together. We have lots more fun planned in the next couple weeks, I cant wait!
