We got baby chicks!! Look how precious they are:

Rowan and I spent Monday morning with Aimee and the boys, having breakfast and visiting. We spent a lot of time talking about all the hippy stuff we are into, including raising chickens. Matthew and I had been talking about it, and Aimee was planning on getting chickens for her backyard too. She called around to find out if anyone had any, but every feed store she called was all out! There was one that didn't answer the phone, and since it was on my way to go get Killian from school, Aimee and I decided to stop by. We arrived, and they had chicks!! I bought 5 Araucana chicks, 2 brown, 2 yellow, and one that is more greyish/black. When they get bigger, they will lay blueish greenish eggs! They are also supposed to be a really well tempered, calm and trusting birds, if you handle them a lot while they are young. And boy, do they ever get handled! The kids are over the moon, every day since we got them Killian has come up to me and said "Mama, I am so glad we got the chicks. I love them so much". Awwwww, my little farmer boy! For now they are in a Rubbermaid tote with a heat lamp, food and water. They will stay inside with us for 4-5 more weeks, giving us time to get their coop and run built. But I think they are going to need a bigger tote with a screened cover...look where they have been hanging out:

And this morning while I was gone, Matthew and Row were in the kitchen, and looked over to see a chick standing on the side of the tote! They are only about a week old, I didn't expect them to try to escape so soon! Its the brown ones that are the trouble makers, they are the first ones to check new things out, the first to peck at us, and the only ones I have seen make it up to the top of the waters. The yellow ones and the grey one are really mellow, and very sweet.
We thought our chickies might like some worms, so we went out to the garden and found a few last night. Killian wont touch a worm for anything, so he told Rowan that she had to do it. She jumped right in, not scared at all of the slimy, slithering, muddy creatures. When we brought them in the house, Row reached right in to grab one:

While Killian preferred a more sophisticated method:

Sadly, they had no idea what to do with the worms, and after a few pecks they left the worms to shrivel and die under the heat lamp. Maybe in a few weeks they will be more interested. They are so much fun, and I am really happy that we finally took the plunge. I cant wait for fresh eggs!!
