Its finally ready!

Matthew and I put in a couple hours of work on the garden this morning, and its finally ready to plant!

The front half of the garden, closest to the lawn is 7 beds and walkways between them all. The beds are all 4 feet wide, and 3 are 13 feet long and the other 4 are 11 feet long. That's a lot of planting space!

The bed closest to the front of the picture above is about half the size of the rest, and regular tomatoes will go in that one. The bed at the very farthest end will be lettuces, as it gets the most shade. Mixed between the rest of the beds will be everything else we want to plant, except potatoes, cherry tomatoes, cuc's, corn and sugar snap peas. They will all go here:

Starting from the closest to the front of the picture, on the left side will be the cherry tomato plants, then along the trellis will be cuc's and sugar snap peas. In the back half of this area, along the fence line will go two blocks of sweet corn. To the right, along the sprinkler posts will go a long row of potatoes.

We have someone coming at 3 today to haul all our garden junk and yard debris away. It turned out (like the rototilling) that we could have in done by someone else for far less than it would cost us to do it ourselves. I like this idea, not only for the obvious (we don't have to do nearly as much work) but also because its helping someone out who is trying to make some money doing some honest hard work. I love supporting that! So with all our junk pile gone, we will get to work constructing compost bins.

Later today, or tomorrow if we run out of time, we will get to the nursery to buy some plants and get them in. We also hope to start (and hopefully finish) the chicken run this weekend, as well as paint the top to weather proof it.

The kids have spent most of the day outside, playing with our neighbor kids. I can hear the squeals of fun as I type this. I am so happy that they are growing up having so much free, unscheduled time. Seems like kids are so overbooked these days, with classes, sports and play dates that they don't have the time to just be kids. I remember playing all day long with my brother outside in the summer, and its one of my favorite memories...and one of the most creative times of my life. We didn't have a lot of toys to play with out there, but we always managed to think something up. I am thrilled that my kids get to have that same experience. Yay for nice sunny days!
