Back to the Oncologist

I had an appointment to see the Oncologist today, the last time I saw him was about 3 months ago. I had gotten an Xray done last Friday and today I was going in to get the results of it, and to talk about the future. Good news first, he said my Xray came back completely clear! I had done another CT scan about 1.5 months ago, and it was clear also, so I wasn't expecting anything on this one, but you just never know. We did go over some things that he had mentioned when I got the CT results, namely some calcification in a lymph node in my lung, and a "noted" lymph node near my stomach. He said that calcification of lymph nodes is always benign, and that its actually a good thing. I guess it happens when you breath in a bacteria and the lung calcifies the area in an attempt to fight it. Nothing to worry about he says, and its actually a common thing, most people probably have it and don't even know. The lymph node near my stomach...I don't quite know what to make of it. He said that the radiologist who read the CT scan "noted" the lymph node, but that it wasn't because it was calcified, or enlarged or abnormal in any way. So....I don't know why it was noted, he said the radiologist was just being thorough. He did say that it was absolutely of no concern to him, he wasn't worried about it being cancerous at all. In fact, that same area has shown up in my CT scans starting in November, it was PET negative for cancer in February, and it hasn't changed in size or anything since then. He said if he was concerned at all he would be "all over it". He is a really great doctor, very knowledgeable and in my case, willing to be very aggressive. He checked out a couple places where I have been having aches and pains on a semi regular basis, near my spine in my upper back and at the bottom of my right rib cage. He thinks both aches are a result of surgery, and nothing to worry about. But he was quick to say that if I started to worry about them, or they became more consistent/painful, that he would be happy to scan them anytime for me. So, with these clear results, the plan is for me to have another CT scan in 3 months, and if that one is clear then I will go back to just Xrays for monitoring. There is a danger in getting to many CT scans, because of the high radiation, having them too frequently can actually cause cancer! So I will get an Xray every 3 months for another 3-5 years, depending on how confident we are both feeling about my health. When we are both feeling good, I will switch to Xrays every 6 months until it has been 5-7 years since my diagnosis. Then, I will be done! I am really feeling good about these results, and also something he said. He told me that he considers me one of his low risk patients. YAY! I love hearing that. I do have total faith in him, I believe that he has my best interest in mind and will be as aggressive with this as we need to be. So to hear him say he isn't really worried about it coming back is a great relief to me. Isnt that great news?!?!
