Thursday morning Rowan and I went strawberry picking to this really great place near our house. They have big clean fields, they don't spray, and their berries are only $1.00 a pound! We picked just over 25 pounds in about an hour...I was surprised at how quick it went. In past summers when Aimee and I have gone, its taken half a day to get a good load of berries. I guess we do usually spend a lot of time chatting though!
Our berries:

First I gave all the berries a bath. Here are the two of the reasons that I always wash the berries twice! First, the dirty water:

And then this cute little fella crawling out of the sink. Strawberry-slug jam anyone?

Blech! So after washing I hulled them all, and started smashing, cooking and canning. I ended up with 18 pints of jam:

And thats after we ate quite a few and shared some with friends and family. I figure we will need about 2 pints a month, so 24 is my goal for us, with another dozen or so to have to give away. So, I guess I better get back out there next week!
