Time for a chicken update! The girls are huge now, and are getting to be pretty entertaining little creatures. For a while now they have been chasing off any birds that dare come into their area, but now they have a new foe....squirrels! We have a few baby squirrels in the neighborhood and like the adult squirrels around here...they aren't afraid of anything. Even chickens. The chickens dont really know what to make of them, but Indianee and Chimmy were very curious about this little guy:

And a few days later, everyone got in on checking this little one out:

He couldn't figure out how to get up the deer netting, so the girls followed him as he made his way back to the wood fence to make a quick escape:

The chickens are also very devious little plotters. What could they be planning now?

Getting a little green snack of course! They have figured out that if they jump high enough, they can grab a bite of the leaves on this little maple tree. Pretty soon, its going to looking like the Hosta plants! Freckles takes a bite:

Chimmy taking a couple turns:

Even little scrappy got a nibble:

Maybe you have noticed that the girls enclosure is all bark dust and dirt. They don't really have much green growing back here, other than the tree leaves and some ivy. They do manage to find a TON of little bugs and such to eat, as they are constantly pecking and scratching. They aren't deprived chickens though, we do let them out to wander the grass once a day for a few hours (although they mostly end up sleeping and pooping on the deck when they are out). We also try to give them some sort of veggie or fruit treat every day, they love melon rinds, lettuce and tomatoes. They are also beginning to figure out that I am the bringer of all that is yummy, and will (mostly) come when I call them. Which works out nicely when I am trying to lock them back up in their enclosure if we are going inside. I don't want to give them alone time in the grass because it would only be a matter of time before they found the garden. Then feathers would really fly!
