Killian graduated from 2nd grade today! Looking back at the past year its amazing how much he has grown up. I love having conversations with him, he is learning so much and has so many questions, and I can see the wheels in his mind turning as he figures things out. He is one smart boy, and I am so proud of who he is becoming. He is one cool kid, that's for sure!
Our tradition is to celebrate the last day of school with a small gift and a little party. I decided to give him his gifts the day before graduation, because we would have friends at home waiting for us and I didn't want anyone to get hurt feelings since Killian would be the only one with presents. He has been anxiously awaiting this day, and was just beside himself trying to figure out what his present could be.

It was the whole series of "Tales of a wimpy kid"! These are really cute books, and although he has already read them (he has checked them out from the school and public libraries) they are the kind of books that he will read over and over again. Part of the series is a do it yourself book, a kind of fill in the blanks for kids. Its really cute, and he has completed a lot of the pages already. I am looking forward to reading it with him when he is done, I bet I am going to learn something new about him!

I also got him a hardbound journal for this summer. Last summer I had brought up the idea of keeping a journal, but he totally shot me down. But this year, being so into the wimpy kids books, which are a journal of a middle school boy, he was all over the idea. Because for us, school isn't going to end today. My plan is to do a little bit of school type work each day, or some sort of fun learning activity. Math can be worksheets or cooking. Writing will be spelling practice and a page a day of journal writing. I am also going to order this handwriting workbook. Reading isn't a problem, he normally has his nose buried in a book already! We will probably aim at going to the library every 2 weeks and doing some summer reading programs also. And we have some science experiment books that we can use for learning science stuff. And Row will be right along with us, this girl is just like her brother and has a thirst for knowledge. I am going to look into getting her the same handwriting without tears workbooks if they have them for preschoolers, and she loves the number and learning workbooks we already have at home. Of course, pages can be printed out from online sources and she can cook and do science stuff with us.
The trick is going to be setting aside time each day for this. As much as I would love to sleep in, we are going to continue getting up early-ish, at about 8:00 when Matthew is getting ready for work. I think if we have breakfast and then get right into a half an hour of worksheet type learning, then we can get it done with and go out and learn and play in the real world. I am hopeful that he will retain a lot this summer and learn much more new information. I am really excited, and I hope that this year we can really stick with it!
