And watch these two videos. This is SO important to me. My eyes have really been opened the last few months (really since my cancer diagnosis) to what we eat, and more importantly, whats in the food we eat. Its scary. Terrifying really, when you get right down to it. The additives that are known to cause cancer, the genetically modified foods that are already outlawed in Europe, but that our government (with money in hand) assures us are safe. The factory farms and the deplorable conditions of the animals in them. That some form of corn is in nearly 25% of the foods you will find in the supermarket...things like frozen waffles, soups, mayonnaise, ketchup, salad dressings and even Twinkies. My question is WHY!?

I will be honest, I never really cared about what was in my food before. There was a time where I loved some hamburger helper, cheap ground beef, and a little soda to wash it all down. But once I started learning about what was in there, the preservatives, the hormones I was feeding my child, the chemicals that were needed to make that cheesy taste and bubbly soda...it makes me sick. In more ways than one! People nowadays are dying of more cancer, more diabetes, more heart disease, and more obesity related problems than ever before. And I truly believe that a good portion of that can be linked back to our food. What we eat is killing us. And that scares me, and really, I think it should scare everyone. We have given our food dollars to corporations that don't care what they feed us. To a government that doesn't protect us, and to farmers that are encouraged to spray our food with pesticides and carcinogens before they sell it to us. And every time we make that purchase, we support what they are doing, and ask them to keep doing it.

And I know...its hard to change the way we eat. Its time consuming to make everything from scratch. Its sometimes difficult to find organic, hormone free meat, and dairy products. It gets crazy expensive to feed your family 100% organic, and to be honest, I don't. I cant right now, its just not financially possible. So instead I choose what is most important to us and take baby steps with the rest. I memorized the dirty dozen, and only buy organic for those fruits and veggies. I take my list of additives with me to the store and try really hard not to buy items with the bad additives in them. We only eat "organic" beef. We drink organic milk. Those are things that I will gladly pay "extra" for because they protect me, and most importantly my kids, from the highest loads of pesticides and hormones. I am working towards eliminating foods with dyes in them, and HFCS, and eventually I would like the chicken and turkey that we eat to be organically raised and treated humanly. We are getting there, and as I learn more and educate myself more, it becomes even more important to me to get there faster.

So with all that, I wanted to share a couple of videos. The first one I just saw tonight, and found out that it will be playing in Portland this week so I am making plans to go see it. The second one can be purchased to watch online which I am going to do soon. Both promise to be eye opening films, and I am really excited to watch them both. Here are the trailers, they only take a few minutes, and are so worth watching.
