It may be a little nerdy, but I love board games! We have a few good ones laying around the house, mostly gathering dust. Seems like two people is to few to play most games, so Matthew and I never get them out. About a month ago I was talking to a friend and we came up with the idea to do a couples game night. It was meant to be like a date night for the parents, but since we are all each others babysitters it wouldn't have worked to make it kid free. So the kids all came along too and we set up a separate game table and activities for them. We had 3 couples join Matthew and I, so that's 8 adults...and there was a total of 10 kids! For having 18 people at our house, the night went really smoothly, and there were no arguments among the kids at all which was awesome.
Somehow most of the pictures we took were of the kids - they are still priority #1 even on a grown up night! They did a slip and slide for a while when everyone first got there. Here is Trevor surfing it:

And Killian sliding...looks like it hurts!

Rowan, Cody and Kyialynn:

As the grown up sat down to play our first game, the kids sat down at their game table...I am not sure if they even played anything, but they stayed over there for quite awhile:

We played Apples to Apples, a game that consists only of two decks of cards: Things and Descriptions. Each turn, the current referee selects a Description and players try to pick, from the cards in their hands, the Things that best match that Description. The referee then chooses the Thing that appeals most and awards the card to the player who played it. The unusual combinations of Things and Descriptions are humorous to the extreme, and will quickly have the entire room in an uproar. Once a player has won a pre-determined number of cards, that player wins. Its a really fun game, and had everyone laughing hysterically.
It started to get dark around 9:30, so we packed the kids up and settled them inside to watch Monster House:

We popped them popcorn, and gave them Capri Suns and headed back outside to the deck to play Battle of the Sexes. In this game players divide into two teams: men vs. women. The goal is to move your team's pawns across the game board. Along the way teams will have to answer questions about the opposite sex in order to move. For example, "How many lugs are on the typical wheel?" or "Where is the Super dome located?" are questions that would be given to the female team. "How do you stop a run in stockings?" or "What type of nut is used to make marzipan?" would be given to the males. The first team to move all four of their pawns across the board wins. Shockingly (hee hee) the guys were in the lead almost the whole game, and looked like they were going to win when one of the girls drew a wild card that said "You get ready to go in less than 10 minutes - move your pawn to the finish line"! The guys sat there with their mouths hanging open, trying to figure out how with one card we won the whole game. It was priceless!!
We ended the night at about 11, after about 3 hours of game playing. It was so much fun we already have a date for the next one, and will probably start even earlier so we can play longer. Its so great spending time with our friends, neighbors and family. Its something that really means a lot to me after this past year, and all the uncertainties that faced us. I don't want to take the people I love for granted, and getting together and laughing with them is something I want to do a lot more of!
