The biggest reason that we wanted to have chickens was for the yummy fresh eggs. You cant get much fresher than eggs that you gather at your back door. The health benefits of free range organic eggs were a huge plus for us too, as well as knowing that the chickens that our eggs came from had happy chicken lives. Unfortunately, that wasn't meant to be for us right now, but the desire for fresh farm eggs is still very much in place. We have had farm eggs before, and there is no comparison between them and store bought eggs. The yolks are bright and orange, the eggs cook up fluffier, and they just taste better. I was never really 100% happy about the sources we had for eggs though. The care of the chickens, the food they were fed, the level of cleanliness or happiness of the animals was never quite where I wanted it to be. And most people probably don't care about that stuff, but I think you can taste the difference. So I am just beside myself with happiness that I have finally found a great source for farm fresh eggs for my family!
The chickens free range on 17 acres (but mostly stay within 3), are fed layer pellets along with fresh grains, windfall fruits (apples and pears), veggie scraps from the garden, and fresh milk and yogurt from the goat and cow that also live on the farm. Every week I pick up eggs for our family, and also for Shirley, Jessica and Merry. We have our own little egg co-op going on, and I think its great. The farm that we get eggs from also raises goats, rabbits, pastured pigs, and heritage turkeys so at some point I hope to be able to buy meat from them as well. I don't think we are quite ready for the raw cow and goats milk yet....but maybe in the future. I love that we are finding more and more ways to stay connected to where our food is coming from!
