Recovering

Yesterday I had surgery to remove the second cyst from my sinuses and it went pretty well. I wasn't sure if I was even going to have the surgery, because 3 days before I came down with an awful cold. It started as your run of the mill head cold, but rapidly progressed into a nasty cough. When I went in the morning of the surgery, they did blood work and a chest Xray to make sure I was well enough for the surgery. They decided I was, and under the knife I went! Its so surreal being wheeled into the operating room! Its just like you see on TV - people standing around scrubbing up, the huge lights above the tiny operating table, tools and trays and machines everywhere. I remember them giving me a shot in my IV to "relax me" and then sticking electrodes on me to monitor my heart and next thing I knew I was waking up in recovery. They feed you ice chips in there, and nothing can beat how refreshing that is to a poor parched mouth!

It seemed like I was there forever this time. I checked in at 7:00 am, and we didn't leave until 2:00! I was worried we weren't going to get released in time to pick Killy up from school. Originally Matthew wasn't going to be able to take the time off work, but at the last minute he was able to switch shifts with someone and stay home. I am so grateful that he did! I had already had a friend volunteer to get Killian from school, and two other friends to take care of the kids, help with dinner and bedtimes, but it was really nice to have Matthew there to comfort me. Surgery is scary, no matter how big or small it is so I was happy to have him and Rowan keeping me company in recovery.

Its been pretty smooth since I have been home. My face is sore, but the worst part has been my throat. It was already swollen and sore to begin with because of the cough, but apparently they had a hard time getting the breathing tube in. I have big scratches all down the back of my throat, and you know that little dangly thing that hangs down the back of your throat? Mine isn't hanging - its all swollen and pushed to the side. It hurts! Yesterday I had to resort to communicating through pen and paper with Matthew, it just to painful to talk. Today is better, and I expect to be back to normal by the end of the week. I am on a lot of meds to help with that, 5 to be exact. Vicodin for pain, an anti-nausea pill because pain pills make me sick, an antibiotic, a cough suppressant pill, and steroids. The steroids are a really high dose, I guess its supposed to bring down the inflammation in my nose. I know I didn't take these or the antibiotics after the last surgery so it must have been really badly infected in there. Kinda gross to think about!

So hopefully this will be the last time for any surgeries in my near future! Its been a rough year health wise, and I am ready for some good health to come my way.
