This is our 3rd year making a gingerbread house together for the holidays, and I think its safe to say that it has been added to our longer by the day list of holiday traditions. We always buy a kit (maybe one year we will get fancy and make our own!) and from the day that we first started seeing them in the stores the kids have been asking when we were going to get ours. We sat down tonight to construct and decorate our house. We are never patient enough to build the house one day and let it dry completely before decorating it, like the directions recommend for "best results". So after we stuck the frame together with frosting and were waiting for it to dry a bit, we had the kids decorate the two gingerbread cookies that came with it. I love how they are both smiling down at their cookies in this picture:

Matthew and I were talking and working on the house when I looked over at Rowan and caught her with the frosting bag....and she wasn't using it on her cookie!

After they ate their cookies we started decorating the house. Usually Matthew or I will do the frosting, and we let the kids do the decorating. They did a great job working together - and of not eating all the candy before it made it onto the house!

It turned out so cute, I think this is our best house ever! Killian had the idea a couple weeks before we made our house to sprinkle coconut around it to look like snow. And what do you know, this year our kit actually came with coconut! He was very excited by that, and the "snow" was the perfect finishing touch. You can tell Rowan has a bit of a sugar high going on in this picture :)

And the house in its place of honor on a shelf in the living room:
