A winter surprise

Yesterday we went to Beaverton to have lunch with Sarah and stop at Powell's bookstore so Killian could turn in some of his old books for cash. While we were looking for new books, Matthew called and told us it was snowing. I thought he was joking at first - we had watched the news together the night before and they hadn't said anything about even a chance of snow. The kids and I ran outside, and sure enough - huge fluffy flakes were falling down. The rest of our errands were quickly forgotten as the kids asked to head home to play in it. The whole way home they were talking about making snowmen and having snowball fights, and I, who was sure that this was a fluke, was telling them that there probably wasn't going to be enough snow for that. Boy, was I wrong! It was sticking to the ground by the time we got home, and the roads were already a little slippery. We quickly bundled up and headed outside. The kids were so excited! So is such a rare treat around here that any little amount is cause for celebration!

The kids got cold, so we headed inside and started a fire. They stripped down to their undies and snuggled up in their sleeping bags with some hot chocolate. They had only been laying down for about 20 minutes when Taylor and Cole got home and wanted to play. So the kids got dressed up again and headed back out. Killian rolled the base and head for this snowman, and I did the decorations:

We also made a snow kitty, in honor of Harlow:

We stayed out until it was dark, and I snapped this picture of the back gate - that's a lot of snow for a freak storm!

I love the way our trees look covered in snow, so peaceful and serene:

We ended up getting 5 INCHES of snow!! I was completely shocked to hear that was the total on the news. There isn't any more snow predicted in the forecast, so I am happy that the kids and I got to play in it while it was here. I do wish we got more snow storms like this, although I don't like the way our cities completely shut down when they happen. Since the snow wasn't predicted, nobody was prepared, so traffic was horrible last night. There were stalls and accidents everywhere. I was lucky not to get caught in it, and neither did Matthew on his way home from work. But a friend spent 5 hours in her car, trying to get home from work and pick her kids up at daycare, a commute that normally would take about 45 minutes. It was like that all over the city, I felt so bad for the people who were stranded. Luckily most of the snow on the roads was melted in time for the morning commute today, and they had lots of snowplows out. It was sad to watch the snow melt though, I am crossing my fingers that we get another good storm sometime before winter is over. Hopefully on a weekend this time!
