Every year we take the kids to Zoolights on New Years Eve, and had made plans this year for Tanya and her family to join us. But when we looked at the forecast, they were predicting heavy rain for Thursday (New Years Eve) so we decided to go tonight instead. It seemed like a lot of people had the same idea - the parking lots were full and I was pretty sure that we were going to have to turn around and go home. Luckily, we found a spot at the very back of the parking lot - the kids were so excited they kept saying "Thank you so much for finding this spot mama". Like I really had anything to do with it ;)
Our plan was to do the train first, but we were unprepared for just how long the line was going to be. Last year we thought the line was long when we had to wait about 45 minutes to get on the train. But this year, the line was easily 5 times as long as last years, and there was no way we were going to stand in it for hours. The kids were disappointed, but they understood - we bought some hot chocolate instead and they were content with that:

Despite the look on his face, Matthew was really having a delightful time! We wandered around the zoo for about an hour, checking out all the lights and displays. I wonder each year how much their electric bill must be, and what all the animals think about the craziness. It really is beautiful, and we had a great time taking everything in. Hopefully next year we will be able to go on New Years Eve though - its always much less crowded. Here are some of my favorite pictures from the night:
