Adventures in Cooking

I grew up eating out of a box - Hamburger helper, Pasta Roni and frozen dinners were all the norm for us, along with plenty of convenience and fast foods. I ate this way well into my adulthood, and it was only about two years ago that I began to take a hard look at the foods we were eating. I wasn't happy with what I found, and I have slowly but surely been changing the way our family eats. Its interesting to me to look back on our food journey, and all that we have learned in the last year about food safety, organic food, naturally raised meats and hormone free dairy products. I think we are in a good place, but we still have a long way to get where I want us to be.

Some of my goals related to food are:
*To make everything that I can from scratch. I envision this to include pasta, bread, crackers, tortillas, bean and rice dishes, ice cream, desserts and all sorts of other homemade foods.
*To grow and preserve as much food as possible from our yard, along with u-pick fruits and veggies
*Cook and eat new vegetables - thinks like turnips, kale, squashes, beats, beans.
*Be more adventurous in the kitchen. This year I want to try new recipes, and find more vegetarian options for meals.

That brings me to this post, Adventures in Cooking. We already make a monthly menu plan, and starting in this month we will be adding at least one new recipe a week. I think it will mostly be dinners, with a few breakfasts or snacks thrown in. I am excited to find new dishes that our family will love, and break "out of the box" in my kitchen!
