New Years Eve 2009

Our original plan for New Years Eve was to spend it at the zoo taking in Zoolights with Tanya and her family. That didn't quite work out as planned (darn you Oregon rain!) so we didn't really have anything going on that night. Sort of last minute Tanya and I talked and decided to get the kids together for a few hours. I knew ahead of time that Matthew and I were not going to be staying up to ring in the New Year. The next morning bright and early we needed to be with Jessica and Wade, helping them work their annual antique auction. But we figured that we could get together for a few hours at least, and have a little bit of a celebration.

Right away the kids fired up the Wii and started playing. We have a game called "Just Dance" that my kids were dying to play with Tanya's kids. It was so cute watching them try to mimic the dance moves they were watching on the screen! Killian and Trevor were playing this round, but Rowan couldn't resist getting in on the action:

While the kids played in the living room, the four of us adults headed into the kitchen to snack and chat, playing a game of Apples to Apples. We were having so much fun that time got away from us, and we had to hurry to get the rest of the festivities under way. We headed outside to do some "firework" poppers with the kids. I got these last year for the first time for Killian and Rowan to do, and they are really fun. Since they are just made of bits of flying paper even the youngest kids could do them without help.

I love the faces the kids make while doing these!

After they were all done we came inside for a little sparkling cider. My kids usually drink their New Years Eve cider out of fancy glasses, but this year we did regular cups because we had friends over. I didn't want any glasses to get broke, and the kids didn't seem to care. Killian and Trevor did the honors:

And they made a toast (probably to legos and crayons):

I hope all they wish for comes true this year!

Steve, Tanya, Matthew and I got in on the drinking too.....the same sparkling cider that the kids had. Our partying days are long gone!

It was a fun night, and I wish that it could have lasted longer. We said goodnight to Tanya and her family at around 10. Killian and Rowan went outside to do the last of the poppers that they had been saving (with more awesome faces from Killian):

Then it was time for bed for them, and they were so tired they went to bed without a peep. Matthew and I tried to get to sleep early, but wound up being awake at midnight, laying in bed listening to the fireworks and celebrations all around us. Ringing in the new year with the people that I love....not a bad way to start the year off!
