Yesterday while Matthew and I were cleaning the garage, we came across some musical instruments that we had out there, which had been completely forgotten about. Finding them of course turned into playing them, and we had a couple impromptu musical jam sessions with the kids. It was so much fun! Matthew got out his bass guitar, and spent some time playing it and showing Killian how to strum it. He has a amp, so it got pretty loud and there was definitely a rock concert feeling in the house!

Matthew also found his djembe drum, and brought that out before dinner. When I was younger I spent a lot of time down at Saturday Market, listening to the drums and watching everyone dance around the drum circles. The sound of many drums is so primal and raw - I really love listening to it. Matthew played while Rowan and I danced around the family room together. We couldn't get Killian to join us, I think he is at that age where he is starting to get shy about looking silly in front of everyone. Rowan and I have no shame though, we shimmied and shook all around the room :)

The last instrument that we uncovered was a afroharp, this cool little wooden instrument that is derived from the African Mbira (google it - its neat looking!). The kids got a lot of delight out of this one, it makes a very satisfying *ping* sound when strummed. Killian figured out how to do the Star Wars theme song on it, and was very pleased with himself!

We all had a great time, I can see us sitting down with all the instruments at one time soon to have a rockin jam session together!
