A quick look outside this morning revealed a stormy, cloudy, and very windy day. The kids wanted to go outside, but their motivation to play in such crummy weather wasn't very high. Until I suggested making ribbon sticks:

I grabbed a few bamboo stakes leftover from last years garden, and the kids helped me measure and tie on strands of ribbon.

They ran out into the street and waved their sticks for all they were worth, catching the breeze when they could and racing around the cul de sac.

Rowans kept getting tangled, but that didn't slow her down at all! She was loving every second of it.

Killy got really creative, using lots of speed to swirl his ribbon in wonderful patterns.

Just another reminder that kids don't need expensive toys with batteries and flashing lights to be entertained. Often times the simple things are more enjoyable anyways. They played outside with these sticks for at least 30 minutes, and the only reason they stopped was because it started to rain heavily. I think these will become a staple of outdoor play this summer!
