Like going to the park

One of the main reasons we bought this house was the backyard. We are on 1/3 of an acre, which doesnt sound like much but feels huge to us. At least compared to what we came from, which was a rental townhouse on a postage stamp sized lot. So when we came here and saw the yard and garden we knew we had to have this house. Another big bonus was the play structure in a corner of the yard. It looks like it was homemade, but its the perfect size for the kids and they love it. But the ground around it has always needed a lot of help. There were some remnants of old bark chips, but it was mostly dirt and weeds, and it got really muddy whenever it rained:

Since the weather this week was supposed to be sunny and dry, we decided that this would be the perfect time to take care of it. Killian and I laid down the weed barrier on Tuesday night:

It looked so clean and nice, I almost wanted to leave it like that! The kids would have it shredded in minutes though, so the next morning after dropping Killian off at school Rowan and I headed to Home Depot to rent a truck. Then we went to a local bark dust place, and had 3 yards of cedar chips loaded into the truck. Those were such a pain to unload, but once I got them off the truck there was a good sized pile in the driveway:

While we had the truck, I went to our favorite nursery to pick up the 3 fruit trees we had decided on the night before (Gala and Fuji apples, and a Dapple Dandy pluot), and after dropping them off and returning the truck, we got to work moving the bark chips. What a workout! Luckily, I did have a helper:

It took Rowan and I about 2 hours, but we got all the bark chips to the backyard, and I cant believe how great the playground looks!

The kids say it looks just like a playground at the park, and I agree with them. We will see how long it lasts ;)
