Meet Lulu!

Last winter I was chatting up my friend Linda about all things farmy when she mentioned that she raises rabbits for pets and meat. She really caught my attention when she told me that rabbit manure was one of the very best fertilizers for the garden, and that it is a "cold' manure so it doesn't even need to be composted before being dug into the dirt. Healthy soil with very little work? I was sold! I began the search for a used rabbit hutch on Craigslist because I would almost always rather buy something slightly used than brand new. Everything I found was too far away, too expensive, or too small. I was starting to get frustrated and feel like we would never be getting a rabbit when I happened upon a lady just down the road from us selling a whole bunch of hutches (she had been a breeder). I hurried over to her house and picked the best hutch, which wasn't easy because they were all very run down. This is the one I chose - nasty and dirty, but solid:

I saw the potential in it though, and knew with some cleaning and a fresh coat of paint it would be perfect for our new bunny. Last weekend I cleaned and sanded the hutch, and then Matthew, the kids and I all got some brushes and painted it a nice barn red. I wanted to do another coat, but the kids and Matthew liked the rustic look of just one coat so here it is, our new old hutch:

Quite the difference, huh? I love the feeling of satisfaction when I finish a project like this!

We went over to Linda's today to pick up Lulu, and I cant even begin to describe how sweet this little girl is. She let Linda hold her and Rowan and I pet her for the whole time we were talking, about 20 minutes. You can tell that she has been given a whole lot of love in her life to be such a mellow and calm bunny. Any fears that I had about adding her to our family were instantly dispelled upon seeing what a happy rabbit she is. I think she is going to be the perfect addition to our family, and I feel really lucky that Linda chose us to be her new family!

Without further adieu, making her blogger debut, here is our new rabbit Lulu!

Isn't she cute? She is a Rex cross, and has fur that is softer than anything I have ever felt. Those big floppy ears and tiny little tail make me smile - welcome to the family Lulu
