Progress in the garden

I don't know if its because we started so much earlier this year, or because I am feeling impatient, but things seem to be taking just shy of forever to start happening in the garden! I am starting to see signs of growth, seeds that are sprouting, and plants slowly getting bigger. It just cant seem to happen fast enough - there is still too much brown out there. I cant wait till the garden is alive and green again.

Our first planting of super sugar snap peas are finally growing up! We started a second planting last week and those have already started to sprout. I read after planting that its better to plant peas all at once, because the first planting will take so long to grow (in the colder spring weather) that the second planting will catch up and all the peas will be ready at the same time anyways. Darn! I can see that happening, but we all like sugar snap peas so much that its really not so much of a problem.

This is our onion bed, there are shallots and bulbing onions in here, along with Guardsman scallion/bunching onions we are starting from seed:

Our first planting of carrots (3 varieties) have been coming up nicely:

Our tomatoes are doing okay, but not great. I don't know about these wall o'water things. They do the job of keeping the plants warm, but don't seem to allow much sunlight in to the plant. As a result, our plants are starting to turn a wee bit yellow. I think we will take these off this weekend, as we should be in the safety zone by then for avoiding a late frost. It will be interesting to see how these tomatoes perform next to the ones we will be putting in this weekend. If there is not a big amount of a time difference between when we start getting tomatoes, I don't think we will use the wall o'waters next year.

Our shelling peas have all sprouted and are growing well...but slowly. So slowly. I hope with warmer weather on the way that they will really start to explode!

I have seen a lot of growth in our red cabbage! The biggest ones are ones that we bought as plants, the ones at the end of the bed we started from seed.

Our broccoli bed seems to finally be growing as well. 5 of the plants are store bought, and have been out here with the store bought cabbage for at least a month. The rows in between are radishes:

The view from the other end of the bed, there are 6 store bought romaine lettuce plants down there. You can see tiny sprouts of spinach growing next to the lettuce:

I seem to be having major problems getting my lettuce to start from seed. I had some that were doing okay, and then something (slugs!?) ate them all! We replanted, and the seeds have germinated a lot quicker, so hopefully we will have success with them. Our collard greens are poking up nicely though:

See what I mean about more brown that green? Hopefully that will reverse here soon:

Lastly, our apple blossoms have been blooming and looking beautiful! Now is the time when I am wishing we had some bee's here to buzz around those flowers, but its been too rainy and wet for them. I hope the sun, and the bee's come out soon!
