Pumpkin carving

We never ended up picking out big carving pumpkins for everyone during our 4 day pumpkin patching spree, so we decided to head to a local farm close to our house to pick some up. We first went to Smiths Berry Barn this summer with my friend Stephanie and her girls. We had a great time picking the berry I love to hate with her and her girls, and found that the Berry Barn is a really cool little place. On the last sunny day of the week, the kids and I drove out there after school to get pumpkins for everyone. The pumpkins they had were all laid out at the front of the store and they were all HUGE! Not a single worthy pumpkin under 25 pounds. At 30 cents a pound, I ended up paying almost $30.00 for four pumpkins that will end up in the compost pile in a few weeks. Oh well. I am just going to look at them as very expensive fertilizer for the garden!

There was a lot of discussion about what to carve into the pumpkins. Killian started out wanting to carve a wizard hat, stars and a wand on his. After he drew it all on with marker he wasn't really that happy with it, and decided to a classic face instead. This is his second year doing all the carving and gutting himself (other than a little help with cutting out the lid) and he is really getting the hang of it.

Rowan was determined to make a dinosaur face on her pumpkin, and drew it out on a piece of paper for reference. Matthew helped her change the design of the eyes a little bit and he cut out the eyes and nose holes for her. She did the mouth mostly herself and was very proud of it:

When we went to the pumpkin patch with Jeanne we stopped in a gift shop and she bought the kids these glow in the dark teeth to go into their pumpkins. They are reusable, and really brought Rowans dinosaur mouth to life:

I actually had two pumpkins to carve, one of them being this itsy bitsy one I picked up at New Seasons. Look at those tiny seeds! I thought it would be hard to carve because it was so little, but it ended up being a lot easier than I expected. I have plans for a big crowd of these little guys next year!

So....how did they turn out? Pretty awesome I think! This is Rowans dinosaur:

And Killian's pumpkin:

Matthew usually uses those pumpkin stencils, but this year he free handed the grim reaper on his pumpkin, and it turned out so good:

And this one is mine - my little pumpkin ended up being dinner for my evil big pumpkin:
