We have been keeping a secret for a few weeks from everyone, but its too hard to keep quiet any longer. There are just a few people who have this blog address, so I decided the time was right to share our news with all of you. Our family is about to get bigger, and we are so anxious to meet our new arrival - and to share her with you!
We have been wanting to get another dog since my dog Jizmo passed away 2.5 years ago. Things haven't been the same without her, and I really miss having a dog around the house. I grew up with a dog, and really want my kids to experience the kind of bond that is only possible with mans best friend. We found a few dogs at the shelter that we thought would be a good match for us, but after a bad experience with aggression issues, we decided to put getting a dog on hold for a while. Matthew and I had a lot of discussions about dog breeds, and which one we thought would be the perfect fit for our family. The one we kept coming back to is the German Shepherd. My neighbor had them when I was growing up, and its a breed I have always loved. They are smart and loyal, and wonderful family dogs. And so darn beautiful!!
We decided to start with a puppy, so that we can get it into obedience and training classes right away. We really want a wonderful family dog that we can take anywhere, and know that means that we will need to put a lot of time and work into training. I strongly believe in adopting cats and dogs from shelters because there are so many that need homes, but with this breed of dog both Matthew and I felt that a better choice would be to buy a dog from a reliable breeder. That way we could ensure that the dog was bred for temperament and health, as poorly bred Shepherds can have problems with both. After many emails and phone calls, we finally found a place that we really like and with a litter that was born on Christmas Eve, the puppies will be ready for new homes in just two weeks!
We don't know for sure what she is going to look like yet, but we have a pretty good idea based on her parents. This is her mom:

And her dad:

They are both purebred AKC German Shepherds, and judging by the pictures of adult dogs from their previous litters - these puppies are going to grow up to be beautiful! Speaking of puppies! Here are a few pictures of puppies from the litter we are choosing from:

Aren't they adorable?! They are 6 weeks old in these pictures, so they wont be a whole lot bigger when they are old enough to come home with us. We are all so excited, hopefully these next two weeks will fly by quickly. I cant wait to share pictures and stories of our newest family member!
