Remember when Sunday dinner was a big family affair, something to be looked forward to during the long hard work week? The day that mom or grandma would walk in the backdoor with a freshly plucked chicken to roast, while the kids were busy shelling beans from the garden on the back porch? The family would gather round a table filled with delicious freshly made whole foods, reconnecting with each other and mentally gearing up for the coming week?
Yeah...me neither. But I sure want my kids to. They probably wont have memories of freshly plucked chickens (unless that winning Powerball ticket comes our way soon) but they can remember gathering every Sunday as a family for a big dinner and lots of family bonding. Oh, and dessert. Because it seems like something that a Sunday dinner wouldn't be complete without. Which works out well since we never ever have dessert, yet I have a bazillion dessert recipes I would like to try out.
This Sunday Matthew and I decided to cook the extra turkey we had gotten from Linda last November. This one was the heritage chicken (a Bourbon Red), and I was so excited to try it to see if there was any difference between it and the broad breasted white turkey we also got from their farm. I am happy to say that it was delicious! So full of flavor and juicy, and we didn't prepare or cook it any differently than normal. It was such a good looking bird, I almost didn't want to carve it!

We didn't go crazy and have a full on Thanksgiving style feast, but we did make a few sides to go with the bird; some gravy, mashed potatoes, Matthews moms stuffing recipe (YUM) and some broccoli:

I made an apple cobbler for dessert, but forgot to take a picture of it. Everyone else loved it, but I wasn't that impressed. Which was fine, because I didn't have any room leftover after stuffing myself with turkey!
We wont be able to cook a big old turkey dinner every Sunday, and there will probably be times when its something simple like a taco bar. And since we eat dinner together at the table every night anyways, I am not sure how much different a Sunday night dinner will really be. But I have an imagine of what it could be like in my head, and I am running with it. Because, after all, I hear there is going to be dessert involved. ;)
