DIY lip balm

One of my goals this year was to learn to make more things from scratch, and so far this year opportunities just keep throwing themselves at me! I made my first batch of soap a few weeks ago with my friend Sarah, and recently I was invited to a lip balm making party thrown by some incredibly nice and wonderfully crafty women. I asked my friend Angela if she wanted to go with me, and of course she said yes, because she herself is a wonderfully crafty (amazing!) woman. We had so much fun, and I can now add lip balm making to my list of items I can comfortably whip up in the comfort of my own home.

It does sound a bit more impressive than it actually is, I don't think there are too many things that are easier than making homemade lip balm. But its really fun, and with the addition of essential oils, the possibilities are practically endless. And its an easy way to limit the amount of toxic chemicals that make it into your house (and into your body)! Just check out the comparison below, and its easy to see why making your own beauty products is a worthwhile endeavor.

DIY Ingredients: pure, filtered beeswax; sweet almond oil; vitamin E oil, aloe vera concentrate, essential oil

That's right - our homemade lip balm contained just 5 ingredients, all of them easy to pronounce. And did I mention how simple this was? Below are the instructions and ingredients you will need to get started.

{ Supplies } found at GloryBee Foods
1 oz. pure, filtered beeswax
½ cup sweet almond oil
½ teaspoon vitamin e oil
¼ teaspoon aloe vera concentrate
½ teaspoon essential oil
lip balm pots or tubes

{ Instructions }
  • Cut beeswax into pieces (the smaller the pieces, the faster it will melt).
  • Combine beeswax, sweet almond oil, vitamin e oil, and aloe vera concentrate in a small, pourable container (a glass measuring cup works well). Place this container in a saucepan and fill the pan with approximately 2 inches of water.
  • Heat the mixture over medium heat until the beeswax is completely melted.
  • Remove from heat and add essential oil.
  • Pour into containers (pipettes come in handy here, otherwise, use a steady pouring hand).
  • Cool completely before use.
Makes approximately two dozen 5 gram (.15oz.) pots or tubes. Instructions courtesy GloryBee Foods

At the end of the night, I walked away with 12 lip balms, with scents that included raspberry, tropical paradise, jasmine lime and bergamot along with a few others.

I went into this night with the thought of giving these away as gifts, since I am not a chap stick sort of person. That's changed now that I have tried them out. This is the most moisturizing lip balm I have ever used, and I find myself reapplying it throughout the day because it makes my lips so soft!

The day after the class, I found myself on another DIY adventure - more soap making with Sarah! I recently realized that I must be allergic to something in my face wash, so Sarah kindly made up an ultra soothing, super moisturizing and gentle face soap bar formula for us to make. And I am proud to say that I did every single step of the soap making myself! From measuring the oils, to pouring and stirring the lye, to blending the mixture and pouring it into molds. It was awesome! And I was happy to see that my first experience hadn't been a fluke - soap making really is easier than I ever thought it would be. I now have a ton of super nourishing face friendly soap, and I cant wait for it to be done curing so I can start sudsing up with it.

I am having such a great time learning new things, and I feel really blessed to have such wonderful women in my life to share knowledge and experiences like this with. They say it takes a village to raise children...but I think it takes a village to nurture happy mama's too! Happy mama's with clean faces and soft lips apparently! ;)
