We had a great spring break this year, even though we didn't get to do all the things I had hoped we would. Matthew and I had really wanted to take the kids and dog to the beach sometime during Killian's week off school but our crummy Oregon weather didn't cooperate and the forecast for the coast was yucky and rainy all week. We did get a few days of sunshine here at home, but those were mostly spent working in the backyard. We have been wanting to replace the back fence since we bought the house, and finally decided to do it this year. Lucky for us, the neighbors on the other side of that fence have had lots of experience building fences, and offered to help us with the construction. While Matthew was at work, the kids and I helped to knock down the back fence (Killian really loved taking a hammer to those old rickety boards!) and get the holes dug for the new posts to be put in:

I am SO excited to get this completed, its going to look really nice when its finished. On rainy days, we had a project to keep us occupied inside too....Killian's first science fair experiment! His hypothesis was that cats would like to eat tuna more than lunch meat or hamburger...and of course we had two very willing participants for his experiment: Porter and Harlow!
Killian did all the date recording and typed everything out, and then Matthew helped him arrange it on his board and I helped with the gluing. I think it came out really well, and I am proud of Killian for putting so much time and effort into it!

Speaking of being proud of him...Killian had his friend Emmanuel come to our house for a sleepover on Thursday night, because the Diary of a Wimpy Kid #2 was movie coming out the next day and I had offered to take them both to it. I was pretty sure that since he had his friend over that he would want nothing to do with his little sister, but he ended up really surprising me. He not only invited Rowan into his room to hang out, but he let her stay to play Pokemon with them AND watch an entire movie in his room! Rowan was having SO much fun spending time with the big boys, and both Killian and his Emmanuel were really nice to her - Emmanuel even let her borrow his prized Pokemon cards for a while! Its moments like this that I can look past the day to day squabbling and see a glimmer of possibility for them to end up having a really wonderful relationship as they get older:

We also spent some time with a few other friends...our little feathered ones!

The chicks are getting so big, its hard to believe that they can grow so fast. All of the first batch that we got are fully feathered out, and the second batch are getting there quickly. We definitely have some favorites - 3 of the Buff Orpingtons - the two older ones and this little lady that the kids have nicknamed sleepyhead because she always falls asleep in their hands:

We like one of the Black Australorps too, and although she is not as friendly as some of the other girls, she is much friendlier than the other two Australorps. But by far our favorites are the Speckled Sussex, and if I had to do it again I would have gotten more of them. They are SO sweet and they have the most personality of any of the chicks. They run to the front of the coop as soon as they see us, and their favorite thing to do (other than dust baths minus the dust...which is hilarious to watch) is to snuggle up next to us. This is a pretty common place to find one of them - laying down and soaking up the love:

I am so excited to have chickens again, I had forgotten what wonderful personalities they have and just how entertaining they are to watch. I cant wait to have them strutting around the backyard!
All in all we had a really fun spring break, and we got to spend a lot of time together as a family. I miss having Killian home with us during the day, and now the countdown has begun to summer break. It cant get here fast enough!
