Adventures

We have been working very hard this year to repair our lawn in the backyard, and to transform it from its sorry weed and moss ridden state to a lush green paradise that begs to be walked on with bare feet on warm summer days. We had to put down iron to kill the moss, then thatch to remove the dead moss, and then aerate to give our remaining grass a little healthier environment to thrive in. The moss remover is supposed to be non-toxic, but I like to be overly cautious with that sort of stuff so nobody has been allowed to play in the grass for a couple months (kids, dogs and chickens included). That wasn't too bad when it was rainy and cold out, but now that the weather is getting a little nicer and enough time has gone by, the grass is open for business again. And that means that the chickens got to take their first real adventure out of their pen today. At first, they were a little unsure:

It is a big scary world out there after all and maybe it would be safer just to eat grass from the doorway:

But all it takes is about 10 minutes, and one brave girl (or rooster in this case):

They stuck pretty close together as they ventured out into the great unknown:

I sure love the sight of all those fluffy butts!

Having chickens this time around has been a lot different for me than I expected it to be, and I definitely don't enjoy them as much as I did our previous flock. For a lot of different reasons, Matthew and I have had many discussions about whether we should keep them or give up the idea of being chicken farmers and as of right now that decision hasn't been made. For now we will enjoy those fluffy little butts wandering around the yard and wait and see what the future brings us...
