The chickens and the hound

I guess its time for a quick chicken update! They are all doing great, growing up fast and looking fat and happy. Its hard to get a good picture of them all, but here is 5 out of the 6 of them:

Ruger is still doing good with them, although I don't let them out in the yard at the same time because he is still very much a puppy, and they still very much look like lunch to him. With German Shepherds having the potential for really high prey drives, I don't know that it will ever be a match made in heaven. But for now he is doing a great job of being respectful of the fence and most of the time he remembers his manners and doesn't run along the outside purposefully making the run, flap and squawk away. Most of the time. He did pose very politely for this picture though - Ruger, the Great Chicken Protector:

I know this post is all about the chickens, but I am going to sneak in another picture of our big boy. He is growing up so fast, and he is such a wonderful part of our family. We love our handsome boy so much!

Okay, back to the chickens. They are total piggies, and are getting spoiled by all the fresh vegetable and fruit scraps we throw their way. They are also getting spent grains from Matthews beer brewing adventures, and they *really* look forward to that and make all sorts of adorable excited little clucking noises when they get some:

If only everyone was as easy to please as these chickens! The rooster will be leaving for his new home in the next couple weeks, and I am pretty sure one of the speckled sussex (if not both) will be joining him. I am going to have Sarah check them out for sure to see if they are boys or just really dominate girls, but there is definitely some weird behavior going on and I would be shocked if at least one of them wasn't another boy. We aren't having the best of luck with these chickens this go around, but as long as they don't all turn out to be boys I will consider it a success!
