The other night I was in the kitchen, no doubt busy doing some domestic chore, when Rowan comes tearing down the hallway yelling that Porter was hurt. I came out to the living room where Porter was sitting, and right away saw little drops of blood all over the floor. Just as I was asking what happened, Killian came walking into the room carrying....part of Porters tail! I ran to pick Porter up, and sure enough, the last inch of her tail was just a bloody stump of bone, stripped clean of fur and skin. Through her tears, Rowan told me she had been trying to shut Killian's door so that Porter couldn't get out, but instead she shut Porters tail in the doorway. When she opened the door again, Porter went one way and the tip of her tail went the other.
We rushed her to the vet, and received the news that they were going to have to amputate the tip of her tail. We all felt so bad for her, and the pain she must be in, but nobody felt worse that Rowan. She was completely inconsolable, and racked with guilt. I tried to reassure her that nobody was mad, accidents happen, and that Porter would be okay, but she was having none of it. The poor girl cried the whole way to the vet, the whole time we were there, and the whole way home. She was still crying when she climbed into bed, and when I laid down with her she said she had never felt more sad than she did right then. We talked and cuddled for a while, and finally came up with the idea of her going to the pet store the next day to buy Porter some treats and new toys, so that Rowan could give them to Porter when she got home from her surgery. It was just the thing that Rowan needed to hear - that she could do something to make this all better, and make Porter feel happy again.
We went shopping the next day, and then headed to the vets to pick up Porter. They told me that they had to amputate more of the tail than they thought they would - the first inch that was missing the skin and fur, and then another addition inch because the bone was crushed beyond repair :(
Luckily once we got Porter home she didn't seem in pain, and pretty much acted like nothing had happened. She sure looks different though!

Even though we were supposed to keep Porter still and quiet, I let her and Rowan play together with her new toys. They both seemed to need it

We are all glad that she is okay, and she already seems back to normal. In the future, Rowan is going to be a lot more careful about shutting doors, and I bet Porter will be a lot more careful about making sure her tail is out of the way!
