Summer in a berry

Its strawberry season again! Oh how we have been waiting for this time of year to come back around. We try to eat as seasonally as possible, especially with fruit, so I haven't eaten a fresh strawberry since they were in season here last year. Thank goodness we had so many frozen from our previous u-picking adventures or I never would have made it through! That first berry I picked and ate out in the field today reminded me why they are absolutely worth such a long wait. It was SO juicy and bursting with strawberry flavor - like the perfect summer all wrapped up into one sweet little berry....yum!

The kids and I settled into the field, and got to picking (and eating). I managed to break all previous records, and pick about 45 pounds in just under two hours. It was like they were practically jumping into by boxes...and I wasn't going to refuse! Our first strawberry haul of the season:

Most of this batch will be destined for jam and the freezer. But we are saving plenty for fresh eating - berry season is so short that we have to get to gorging on them while we can! I picked about 60 pounds last year, and once again we ran out of jam and frozen berries too early. This year I am hoping to pick much more, so we will have to head out at least a couple more times to the u-pick place. Hopefully we can really stock up and put away enough to get us through the year. Viva la strawberries!
