Matthew and I took the kids to Portland today, to hike up Mt. Tabor and check out the annual Soapbox Derby races. I had never heard of them before, but apparently they are a big Portland tradition (that's what I get for living in the 'burbs) and there were a ton of people there. We perched ourselves on a hillside, and got ready for some fun.
There were lots of different soapbox cars, from the totally wild to the aerodynamic fancy ones. These are just a few of the ones we saw.
The tank - they were shooting water out of that cannon looking part:

The rib cage? Not exactly sure what this one was supposed to represent:

This guy's was a beer can, and he must have drank a few too many while building it cause it had no speed and someone had to push him down the hill!

One of the more serious, fancy ones:

Is it a car, or a soapbox? You decide:

No derby would be complete without the hot firefighters! ;)

What is it that they say? Keep Portland Weird? These guys are certainly doing that! They were one of my favorites, probably because of those absurd hats and gold capes they are wearing:

This guy is totally cheating!

Of course there also had to be a few 70's basketball players along for the ride. Rip City Baby!

Seems like these people were looking for a roller coaster ride:

Another cheater, this time with a 40:

Speeding down a twisty hill on a homemade contraption, face first on your belly? Just another day at the park for this guy:

While we were sitting there:

We saw lots and lots of people wearing funny costumes:

We figured out later that they must all be along for the ride with this Mario Bros derby car:

The people watching is almost better than the derby racing! It was definitely a good time, and one of those events that makes me glad that we live near such a wacky fun city.
