Making a trade

I really love trading and bartering goods with people. I have had quite a few successful trades in the past, and have found that it's a great way to get things you want for a price that can't be beat (free!) and its also a fantastic way to meet new people who have similar interests. Such was the case for me with a trade I recently made. I saw someone post that she had free water kefir grains on a message board, and I sent her a message to make arrangements to pick some up. Turns out, we have a bunch of mutual friends, and quite a few things in common, like our interests in fermented and traditional foods. I love it when a plan turns out even better than you thought it was going to!

While she was offering the grains for free, I wanted to thank her for her generosity (buying grains online can cost $15-$20) so I packed her up a little box of veggies from our garden to make the trade:

When I got there to pick the grains up, we spent quite a while chatting about different fermented foods, and ideas for second fermenting the kefir. It was fun to meet a new friend, and I am really excited about getting started with water kefir. The grains are really funky looking, like little baby cauliflowers:

These tiny super grains* produce a sweet, fantastically fizzy homemade soda sort of drink. Except its much, much better for you than any soda could ever be, and with all the probiotics the drink naturally contains, it does wonders for keeping your body healthy and your gut happy. I am reading up on second fermenting it, because I think that's going to be the key to getting Matthew and Killian to consume it. I can't wait to experiment...let the fermentation begin!!

*not really grains at all, but symbiotic colonies of bacterias and yeast - exactly what my kombucha making SCOBY's are made up of! Isn't fermentation fun?
